Seven women from the United States Navy will take part in the historic flight that will take place above State Farm Stadium on Sunday, before to Super Bowl LVII, which will feature the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
According to the Navy, the flyover will celebrate “50 years of women flying” for the maritime military branch, which first started providing flight training for females in 1973.
The Navy has been informed by Lt. Katie Martinez, a Naval Flight Officer who is assigned to VFA-122, that she is ecstatic to be a part of such an important occasion.
Martinez detailed the experience by saying in a news release dated January 27 that “it’s not a sensation I can even put into words.” It doesn’t get much larger than the Super Bowl, and it’s an honor and a privilege for me to be able to take part in this once-in-a-lifetime experience with my friends and fellow Naval Aviators.
According to the Navy, six of the first eight women to enroll in the Navy aviation school in Pensacola, Florida, went on to receive their Wings of Gold after completing the program a year later. These ladies were honored as “The First Six” and cleared the path for other women to follow in their footsteps.
A flyover like the one that is scheduled to take place on Sunday, according to Lt. Catie Perkowski’s comments, is “any pilot’s dream.”
“But for me, as a football fan, when I got the call to do the Super Bowl flyover, it’s almost like a dream initially for someone who loves the NFL,” Perkowski also said.
The all-female squad will fly over State Farm Stadium at a blazing pace of about 345 miles per hour while forming a diamond configuration in the air.
