Backstreet Boys singer AJ McLean comments on her daughter’s actions: “It is her body; it’s her name”

The 9-year-old daughter of Backstreet Boys singer AJ McLean decided to change her name from Ava to Elliott, and he recently talked about it.

In a story that People published on Friday, McLean stated that he would support his daughter’s decision to change her name for any reason.

“At first, I didn’t know if it was a transgender thing when my daughter asked to change her name to Elliott, which is not the case, but it is a personal choice,” McLean said. It is her everything, including her body and name.

In an Instagram post about returning to school in August, Elliott’s mother disclosed her new name.

She remains Ava. “But at the same time, whatever reasoning it is, that’s hers, and I’m going to support it a million percent; my wife will,” McLean said in an interview with People. “She’ll always be Ava to me.”

Elliott chose her new name more than a year ago, according to McLean. He recalled his daughter saying, “Dad, I just feel like my name is not that unique and not that original, and there are a lot of Avas at dance and a lot of Avas at school,” in reference to how common her name is.

According to People, McLean’s wife, Rochelle, responded to inquiries about Elliott’s name change on her Instagram story in August.

Elliott’s name change is not a gender issue, she wrote, adding that her daughter had wanted to change her name for a very long time but that the name Elliott “stuck.”
