Dame Judi Dench pianist? A legendary actor surprised the guests of a tavern by performing an unexpected rendition of ABBA…

In a bar in Scotland, just before the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve, a Hollywood icon surprised everyone by playing the piano and singing a duet with a local musician.

The renowned English actress Dame Judi Dench and the talented Scottish singer Sharleen Spiteri pleased hotel guests with a lively duet rendition of the popular song “Waterloo” by ABBA.

The 88-year-old actor is most known for her role in the James Bond film Skyfall. She contributes an occasional vocal flourish as Spiteri carries the main melodic line.

The viral performance took place at The Fife Arms in Braemar, Aberdeenshire, shortly before a firework display rang in the New Year. It has received more than 200,000 views on Twitter.

Apologies are extended to those who were taken aback by Dame Judi’s apparent piano talent at the bar; the instrument in question is really a piano that plays itself.

The national treasure plays the part of a pianist extremely convincingly thanks to her signature elegance and the way her fingers seem to glide above the keys while she plays. Oh, come on, there’s a reason why she took home an Oscar.

Jennifer Johnston, a mezzo soprano, made a witty remark about the soprano, saying, “She’s so amazing, she carries about a fairy to play notes on the piano when her fingers aren’t on them.”

In an interview , Ewan Venters, chief executive officer of Artfarm, the company that runs the bar, explained how the collaboration came about.

“[Judi and Sharleen] had seen one another in the past, but after dinner they got together in the lobby and started playing the piano,” recalled Venters. “The guests were a little taken aback, but they really loved it!
