McCallum had two marriages. His first wife was Jill Ireland, with whom he had three children. The couple naturally received Paul and Val and then, after a miscarriage, adopted their son, Jason.
They were happily married for a while, but their marriage ended when Ireland had an extramarital affair with actor Charles Bronson. McCallum said that he doesn’t hate Bronson because his wife had an affair with Bronson.
He agreed that it was hard because they had three kids, but he and Ireland were able to work out their differences in a peaceful way. While Bronson was a fellow actor and McCallum’s acquaintance, he didn’t stay down for long, and he quickly married again.
The ‘NCIS’ alum married Katherine Carpenter for the second time. Throughout their marriage, McCallum and Carpenter had two children. Sophie and Peter are their children, of whom they are quite proud. The couple created a lovely life together and are still in love.
Carpenter and McCallum are still blissfully married in 2022, 55 years later. Carpenter has eight grandchildren among his five children from his two marriages. He adores being a grandpa and has shown his affection for his grandkids on several occasions.
McCallum is a proud father of five children, with whom he enjoys a close bond. Val and Paul, his two biological children from his first marriage, are musicians and studio photographers, respectively. His youngest child from his first marriage met a tragic end.
The actor stated that he spends a lot of time with his two eldest children and their children. But he experienced a devastating loss when his youngest son from his first marriage, Jason, died at the age of 20.
McCallum was heartbroken by the loss of Jason, who overdosed and died when he was still quite young. Following his son’s death, McCallum went through a difficult period of sorrow, as he explained:
“You never recover from the death of a kid. The anguish is palpable, yet it manifests as an agony that escalates into rage.”
His youngest son, Jason, was adopted during one of McCallum’s hardest times, and they were close until Jason died. Following Jason’s death, a young woman approached McCallum with some excellent news.
The young woman revealed to McCallum that she and Jason had a kid named Tory. The actor and his family have accepted Tory, and McCallum has stated that he hopes the young man will develop into the kind of man his father was before his passing.
Peter, the son he had with his second wife, works in advertising, and Sophie, the daughter he had with his first wife, used to work in real estate. Sophie abandoned her real estate profession to start and raise her own family.
McCallum and Carpenter are now grandparents to eight grandchildren among their five children. The kids call McCallum “Granddaddy” or “Grandducky,” since he thinks “Grandpa” sounds too elderly.
McCallum stated that he is not elderly and should not be termed anything that makes him appear such. Despite his pleas to his grandkids not to make him appear elderly, he adores them and is never afraid to share images with them.
Although McCallum does not have an Instagram account, he does share images of himself with his grandchildren on his Facebook page. Each of them has received admiring responses from admirers.
He tweeted a photo of his grandson wearing sunglasses and a bag, referring to him as “A Young Ducky,” and explaining that he meant one young grandchild. Followers remarked on how much the small youngster resembled his grandfather.
McCallum has posted pictures of himself, his family, and each of his grandchildren. Images of the grandkids alone are normally kept for special occasions, but dad occasionally publishes a cute shot just so the world may see it.
His grandson’s sixth birthday, which he celebrated in 2016, was one of these great events. McCallum shared a photo of the young man, who was wearing round glasses and drinking from a straw. He stated that the photograph was taken on the youngster’s sixth birthday.
While exceptional events call for images of his grandkids on their own, there are also times when every member of the family is included in the shot. One of these occurred on the anniversary of McCallum’s naturalization as a US citizen.
McCallum was born in the United Kingdom and became a US citizen later in life. To commemorate the anniversary, his grandkids got him some sweet treats, and they all celebrated together, sitting at a circular table, where his grandchildren were enthralled by the goodies.
McCallum frequently publishes images with captions that describe what the picture is about. But there are images of moments that speak for themselves and do not require a text to convey the love and pleasure captured in the snapshot.
McCallum shared one of these photos in early 2019. McCallum is seated with three grandchildren and three additional individuals who have not been identified. The snapshot depicts love and happiness, with each participant wearing a pleased look.
McCallum mentioned that he had six boy grandchildren in New York and two girl grandchildren near him. Despite the fact that his grandkids reside on opposite coasts, he visits them all frequently. He cracked a joke:
“I keep the boys and girls on opposite coasts so I can keep track of them.”
He also thought it was funny that one of his grandchildren calls him “Grandducky.” However, he is happy to be a grandfather and loves having grandchildren.
