Dick Van Dyke, 97, still smiles while walking with a cane. He was beaming with his young wife, who wore a revealing dress two years ago

Dick Van Dyke is a well-known theater, television, and film actor. He has earned a Tony, a Grammy, and five Primetime Emmy Awards for his contributions to the entertainment sector, and he was most recently recognized at the Kennedy Center in May 2021.

Van Dyke, who was born on December 13, 1925, in West Plains, Missouri, had a natural flair for amusing people. The actor has experimented in a variety of genres throughout the years, from vaudeville to nightclub acts to radio. However, he is better known to the general public for his work in television and film.

His most famous performances include “Bye, Bye Birdie,” which captivated audiences on stage from 1960 to 1961 and in a film adaptation two years later. He sang “Put on a Happy Face” in it, which became a fan favorite. The actor recounted how he received the song thanks to his co-star Chita Rivera:

“You know, Dick doesn’t have much to do in the first act,” Chita replied. Why don’t you hand it over to him? “And that’s when my life changed.”

From 1961 until 1966, he appeared in “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” a comedy. Following that, he played Bert the chimney sweep in the 1964 musical “Mary Poppins,” with Julie Andrews. He was also well known for his role in the 1996 film “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.”

The actor, who is 97 years old, has made an effort to maintain his physique. His training routine involves a variety of exercises designed to strengthen various sections of his body, including his abdominal muscles, legs, and arms. He even went so far as to show how he does it, pushing other “old dudes” to do the same.

As a young actor, he succumbed to the vices that beset individuals in the industry, and regrettably, many do not survive.

Not only is he physically fit, but the “Diagnosis Murder” actor has kept his trade alive. He can still dance and sing like he did when he was younger. His abilities were recently showcased in the film “Mary Poppins Returns,” starring Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel Miranda.

When given a choice between three dance routines, he picked the most difficult one merely to prove that he could execute it at the age of 92. And the actor has no intention of retiring. He is dead set on breaking the century mark. The nonagenarian said about his fellow actor and comic who lived to be 100:

“It was accomplished by George Burns. And I’m going to make it as well.”

Van Dyke has demonstrated his musical ability by performing alongside his wife, Arlene Silver. They did a beautiful rendition of Doris Day’s “Everybody Loves a Lover,” first sung in 1958, in a video released on Valentine’s Day.

The actor is also noted for having a giving and compassionate heart. He routinely attends the Malibu Community Labor Exchange, an organization that connects job seekers with companies. He not only talked to the homeless, but he also gave them money to assist them.

Even the difficult seasons and parts, as well as the projects that received mixed reviews from critics and viewers, all helped shape him into the actor and man he is today.

A few weeks later, Van Dyke, whose staff have dubbed him an “angel of God,” was photographed giving away dozens of winter clothes at the same charity foundation. He bought the red plaid coats to give out to others who didn’t have anything warm to wear to keep them warm in the cold.

However, the actor has not always been concerned about his health. He was once a victim of the vices that afflict some in the profession, and regrettably, many do not survive them. His health problems motivated him to make a shift. He stated, having lived to a ripe old age:

“I would have taken better care of myself if I had known I’d live this long.”

Van Dyke allegedly struggled with alcoholism in the 1970s. He also smoked for more than 50 years, consuming 20 to 40 cigarettes every day. He claimed that quitting smoking was far more difficult than quitting alcohol. In April 2011, the actor also underwent spinal surgery.

The “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” star was among the recipients at the 43rd Kennedy Center Honors ceremony this year. These honors are bestowed on excellent performers in the performing arts. The actor, who was reliving his career stages up to that time, stated:

“Peer recognition is always the frosting on the cake.” How did I end up with a Kennedy Award? “I never worked out or trained.” “I just had a good time.”

Van Dyke was honored by Debbie Allen, Joan Baez, Garth Brooks, and Midori. He walked the red carpet with his wife, Silver. The actor, who was dressed in a black tuxedo and smiled broadly, walked with a cane. Silver wore a floor-length glittering gown with a daring neckline and looked stunning.

Van Dyke feels lucky to have had wonderful possibilities over his 70-year career in Hollywood. Even the difficult seasons and parts, as well as the projects that received mixed reviews from critics and viewers, all helped shape him into the actor and man he is today.

Because his art is interwoven into the fabric of people’s lives, his popularity spans numerous generations of followers.

One notable incident was his cockney accent in “Mary Poppins,” which some feel cost him an Oscar nomination. The Kennedy Center Honor took Van Dyke by surprise, as he had no expectation of being acknowledged at his age and stage in his career. Some argue that it was a long time, given his years in Hollywood.

Van Dyke and Silver have an unusual connection because he is 46 years her senior. But their love story sounds like something out of a storybook. When asked about the disparity, Van Dyke cracked a joke:

“The age gap hasn’t been an issue.” Emotionally, I’m roughly 13 years old. “She’s really mature for her age, and I’m having the time of my life.”

Silver was first concerned by their age gap. She warmed up to the notion of being in a relationship with the actor after spending time with him. She regarded him as a buddy rather than his age until it was no longer an issue.

Silver had been working as a makeup artist for the Screen Actors Guild Awards for five years when they met. They started a discussion when the actor introduced himself. Later, Van Dyke recruited her to work on some of his Hallmark Channel movies. Their bond became stronger as they spent more time together.

Silver and Van Dyke married in February 2012 at a Malibu church after six years as friends who became lovers.

Silver was there for him when he lost his 33-year spouse. They realized after a while that they preferred spending time with each other to spending time with anyone else. Silver saw Van Dyke as having the attributes she was looking for.

Her spouse was regarded as the “ideal mate,” and their relationship was like a second childhood for both of them. She gets to have fun with a partner who is open-minded and excited about her. When asked what her favorite aspect of being married to her spouse was, Silver replied:

“Everything. He makes me feel as if I can do anything. He’s my biggest supporter. “He simply believes in me.”

The cosmetics artist described her life as a contemporary fairytale. She progressed from working behind the scenes at Hollywood events to getting dressed and applying makeup on the red carpet with her partner. The two have blended their lives, and the others in her life are overjoyed to see her happy.

Silver and Van Dyke married in February 2012 at a Malibu church after six years as friends who became lovers. Silver opted for a basic pink dress from a department store rather than a conventional bridal gown.

Their relationship is filled with “laughting, music, dancing, love, positivism, and joy.”

The pair conducted a second ceremony with a marine/circus theme in September of the same year. The colorful wedding included a circus tent with a gymnast in a plastic bubble pool and a hula-hooping bride, in line with the happy couple’s personality.

Van Dyke, for his part, stated that marrying Silver was one of his wisest moves. She brings music and joy into their house and is an excellent chef. When asked about his relationship with his “angel,” the actor stated:

“We have a similar outlook.” She is capable of going with the flow. She enjoys singing and dancing, which we do nearly every day. “She’s simply lovely.”

Their common hobbies and outlook on life have resulted in a harmonious marriage. Their relationship is filled with “laughting, music, dancing, love, positivism, and joy.” Silver posts clips from her Instagram account as well as the TikTok account they share.

Silver has stated that she is not bothered by the fact that people flock to the renowned actor. Because his art is interwoven into the fabric of people’s lives, his popularity spans numerous generations of followers. The pair lives in Malibu and is completely dedicated to each other. Silver raved about having an essential role in her husband’s life:

“I do my hardest to look after him and make him happy.” I just think my presence here makes him happy. “I cook for him and enjoy caring for him.”

Van Dyke is a devoted grandfather to his seven grandchildren. He has four children with his first wife, Margie Willett: Barry Van Dyke, Carrie Beth Van Dyke, Christian Van Dyke, and Stacy Van Dyke. While shooting “Diagnosis Murder” with his son Barry, additional family members also appeared on the show.

As he gets closer to and hopefully reaches his 100-year goal, Dick Van Dyke will be remembered as a bright light in the entertainment business, a cornerstone in the history of American culture, and a generous member of his community.
