Drake is having second thoughts about mentioning his exes in his songs, specifically in the context of name dropping.
This week, the Certified Lover Boy rapper made an appearance on the first episode of Moody Talks with Lil Yachty. During this conversation, Lil Yachty spoke up about mentioning his exes in his songs.
Drake, who is 36 years old, has said that he could have avoided singing about his exes by “maybe I coulda done without, like, s—ing on anybody for age or disturbing somebody’s life.”
The rapper who went under the stage name “Knife Talk” continued by claiming, “The songs are never written with ill purpose, but I once had someone tell me, ‘You know, it’s not necessarily what you’re saying about me, it’s the fact that you said it.'”
After that, he continued by thinking back on a discussion he had with an ex-girlfriend on the issue.
He said that she had remarked to him: “You are unaware of who my partner was at the time, and you are also unaware of whether or not my family knew about our relationship.
And if you show any type of unhappiness toward me and call me by name in a song, then all of a sudden I’m left to pick up the pieces of my own life that I’ve fought so hard to build up for myself.'”
Drake stated his conclusion by saying, “So, I’ve done my best to quit doing that, but I also like being honest in music, so that particular aspect is a push-and-pull for me.”
Drake has hinted in a number of his songs throughout the course of his career that he had dated famous people, including Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, and SZA. He even mentioned SZA by name in his song “Mr. Right Now,” which was released in October 2021.
