Many of Brittney Griner’s supporters compared her to LeBron James in the weeks following her extended detention in Russia, believing that the US would have found a way to bring her home. James is now speaking out about the situation.
In a preview for a new episode of his HBO show The Shop, James seems to blame the government for what he sees as a lackluster effort to free the Phoenix Mercury Center, which has been in jail since February.
“How can she possibly believe that America is now on her side?” In the clip, James says, “I’d be thinking, ‘Do I even want to go back to America?'”
Griner was arrested earlier this year at a Moscow airport for allegedly bringing hashish oil into the country via vape cartridges. Griner, who faces up to ten years in a Russian prison, pled guilty to the charge during a trial hearing last week, a decision that some believe may help speed up the process of bringing her home.
Griner’s agent, stated on Twitter in June, “Regardless of the legal proceedings, the negotiation for her immediate release should remain a top priority, and we expect @POTUS and @VP to do everything in their power, right now, to bring her home.”
Colas said that her arrest was a political move by Russia, and in May, the US government said that Griner was being held “illegally,” which suggested that the US would fight hard for her release.
Griner expressed her concern about her imprisonment in a handwritten letter to President Biden earlier this month. “I’m afraid I’ll be here in a Russian prison forever, alone with my feelings and without the safety of my wife, family, friends, Olympic shirt, or any accomplishments,” she wrote.
