Mariska Hargitay was 3 and asleep in the backseat during a car crash that took her mother’s life at 34. Nowadays, the “The Law & Order” actress is her mother’s twin

Jayne Mansfield was born Vera Jayne Palmer in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, in 1933. In 1953, the actress was romantically related to Mickey Hargitay, a Hungarian weightlifter and former Mr. Universe.

Mansfield and Mickey were married on January 13, 1958, at the Wayfarers Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. The couple welcomed their first child, a boy named Mickey Hargitay Jr., on December 21, 1958.

Zoltan Hargitay, the couple’s second child and son, was born on August 1, 1960. The couple divorced in 1964, but when the actress found out about her third pregnancy, she postponed their divorce proceedings.

She and Mickey publicly stated that they were still together, and their daughter, Mariska Hargitay, was born the same year. The couple split not long after the birth of their third child.

Mansfield missed out on the lead role in “Kiss Me, Stupid” because she declined due to her pregnancy. While her career was calmer, she returned to the stage in 1966 and appeared in Westbury’s “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.”

After their divorce, she and Mickey remained close, and he supported her performance by giving her flowers. The actress rose to fame because she resembled a typical stupid blonde but was really intelligent.

Growing up, the celebrity was interested in broadening her education, knew five languages, and was a good student. She studied violin and singing as a kid and had an IQ of 149.

Mariska was described as a “darling” by Mansfield in her book, “Jayne Mansfield: The Girl Couldn’t Help It.” She saw how similar they were, with pug noses and blue eyes.

The actress announced that her children will accompany her to Europe to learn about the globe. Mansfield was remembered as a caring and clever woman who loved her family and others but died while her daughter was just three years old.

On June 28, 1967, Mansfield, 34, was killed in an automobile accident involving a tractor-trailer. She was traveling from a nightclub engagement in Mississippi to New Orleans for a shoot the next day.

The driver, the actress, and her lover, Sam Brody, all perished instantaneously. Three of Mansfield’s children were sleeping in the backseat and survived, leaving Mariska, who was also in the car, motherless at the age of three.

Mariska’s brothers, Mickey Jr., who was eight at the time, and Zoltan, who was six at the time, both survived. The future actress was reared by her father, who provided her with a typical upbringing in which she ran cross-country, participated in the swim team, and played volleyball, but her mother remained an important part of her life.

Mariska said in March 2018, “The way I’ve lived with grief is to lean into it.” Despite the fact that she never got to know her mother well, the “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU)” actor claimed she and Mansfield had a love of life and were both inspirational, adding:

“‘All you have to do is look in the mirror,’ someone once said regarding [remembering] my mother. She’s still with me.”
