When Sara Beth Liebe tried out for Season 31 of American Idol, judge Katy Perry noticed more than just how well she could sing. Others on social media accused Perry of “bullying” and “mom-shaming” the contestant, which she found “embarrassing” and “hurting.”
During the March 5 broadcast of American Idol, Liebe was shown getting ready to audition for the judges—Perry, Lionel Ritchie, and Luke Bryan. When Ritchie and Bryan both complimented Liebe on her young appearance, she informed them she was 25 and had three children, at which time Perry seemed to rise up from the table and make a frightened grimace before lying down again.
“If Katy sleeps on the table, I fear I’m going to pass out,” the mom of three remarked.
Perry said, “Honey, you’ve been lying on the table too much.”
While Perry, who has a 2-year-old daughter named Daisy, did not overtly say anything negative about Liebe being a mother of three at the age of 25, her reaction and answer did not sit well with Liebe after watching her episode air.
“It was embarrassing to have it on TV,” the singer stated in a TikTok and Instagram video. “That was upsetting. I believe it’s awesome when women support and encourage other women, and I think mom shaming is ridiculous. I believe that being a mother and a lady are both difficult tasks.”

Perry also asked Liebe at her audition, “Is this your dream? If it’s not your dream, you might need to go since there are a lot of dreams behind you,” meaning that her dreams as a mother were behind her.
When Perry learned about her three children, Liebe was not the only one who was dissatisfied. Many of Perry’s fans have taken to her Instagram page to ask her to apologize for what some perceived as “bullying” behavior.
“The way you harassed the parent competitor… she stated she’d been resting on her back too much AND that she had a lot of dreams behind her… wow.. at a loss for words,” one social media user said. “It broke my heart. “Do the right thing and publicly apologize to Sara Beth,” commented another.
“As a mother of three, when someone asks me what my dream is, it actually takes time to answer since three dreams rely on me as well,” another YouTube commenter said.
Romper has requested a response from Perry’s reps.
The mother of three was eventually flown to Hollywood after both Perry and Luke Bryan voted yes based on her performance, indicating that something great occurred during her audition.
Although Liebe’s experience on TV was awful, she came out in her video to thank fans for their support. “I see all of the young moms, and just moms in general,” she continued, “who have commented on all of the videos and postings and everything.” “I simply wanted to say that I see you, I hear you, I am glad for you, and you are deserving.” Continue to adore your children.”
