Morgan Freeman attended the 95th Academy Awards Sunday night, but viewers noted he was wearing an odd adornment as he took the stage.

The Shawshank Redemption star sported an elbow-length glove as he ascended the stage alongside Margot Robbie to honor Warner Brothers Studios’ 100th anniversary.

While many have dismissed this as a fashion statement, there is a terrible reason why the actor was forced to wear the glove at Friday night’s Oscars.

In truth, the actor has worn a compression glove on his left hand since a serious vehicle accident in Mississippi in 2008.

Freeman was traveling late at night when his automobile went off the road, spinning multiple times before landing in a ditch near his home.

According to a local newspaper, paramedics had to use hydraulic cutters to extricate him from the truck, with the actor remaining aware and cracking jokes with rescue workers throughout his ordeal.

As rescue personnel attempted to treat Freeman at the site, his injuries were too severe, and he had to be transported nearly 100 miles away to a hospital in Memphis.

When they arrived, they discovered that the then-71-year-old had many shattered bones and had spent over four hours in surgery having his arm fixed.

While he was allowed to resume acting, Freeman was left with chronic nerve damage and excruciating shoulder discomfort.

Since he couldn’t move his left hand, it swelled up, so he put on the compression glove to make himself feel better.

In an interview with People magazine in 2010, Freeman stated that his injuries have never improved.

“If you don’t move your hand, it will swell,” he explained. “Did you realize your hand moves roughly a million times every day?”

He also told Esquire a few years later that the automobile had exacerbated his fibromyalgia, with shoulder agony shooting ‘up and down’ his arm.

Even though some fans might not know why he’s wearing the gloves, this isn’t the first time he’s been to a big event while wearing them.

For the opening ceremony of the FIFA Qatar World Cup in 2022, the actor was also seen wearing a similar compression glove.

The Oscar winner shared the platform with handicapped YouTuber Ghanim al-Muftah, who spoke about “tolerance and respect” during the high-profile athletic event.
