Okay, I’ll admit it. Dirty Dancing is a movie I’ve never seen. I also haven’t listened to the soundtrack, which includes a song performed by Patrick Swayze (“She’s Like the Wind”). That being said, everyone knows he can dance, but until today, I had no idea Patrick Swayze could sing. And he could sing!
This video of Patrick Swayze performing “Love Hurts” with Larry Gatlin is terrifying! The duet is straightforward and soulful. Swayze’s soft voice complements Gatlin’s country twang perfectly. With just one fiddle and one acoustic guitar, they give the classic, sad lyrics a new sound in their version.
Felice and Boudleaux Bryant wrote and composed “Love Hurts,” which was first recorded by the Everly Brothers in 1961. However, Roy Orbison was the first to chart “Love Hurts.”
In 1990, Swayze and Gatlin performed the song in Orbison’s honor at a benefit concert for the homeless, and it’s absolutely stunning! The audience devours their performance, which is still a joy to hear today.
