Richard Gere was recently admitted to the hospital with pneumonia while on a family vacation.
According to TMZ, the 73-year-old actor had pneumonia while on vacation in Mexico for his wife’s 40th birthday. Richard’s spokesperson verified the story in an email to NBC News but declined to speak further.
Richard had a nasty cough that worsened before the family’s trip. When in Mexico, he had to check himself into a hospital, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. The actor spent the night in custody but was released the next day.
Richard and his wife, Alejandra Gere (née Silva), were on vacation in preparation for her 40th birthday on February 16.

She documented their trip on Instagram, uploading a snapshot of herself going toward the ocean on a beach with the couple’s two children. In the post, she also revealed certain health issues her family had experienced in recent weeks.
“Thank you everybody for your birthday greetings. After over 3 weeks of everyone in our family being sick, I finally feel much better today!” She penned a letter. “Thank you for all your affection; I return it to you!”
On February 18, she posted a romantic Instagram story of the pair strolling hand in hand with their kid. “Beach day,” she simply captioned the shot.
After several years of dating, the couple married in April 2018 and had their first son, Alexander, in February 2019. They welcomed their second child together less than two years later, another son whose name has not been made public.
Both Richard and Alejandra have children from prior relationships. The “Beautiful Woman” star has a 23-year-old son with his ex-wife Carey Lowell, Homer James Jigme Gere, while Alejandra has a son from a previous relationship.
The couple wants to keep aspects of their family life private, including their children’s faces. In their 2022 Christmas card, which Alejandra published on Instagram, they gave followers a rare peek at the family of four. She shared a snapshot of the family from behind, standing side by side on a deck and looking into the lake.
