A young kid from Iowa is making news after he saved an elderly man and his dog by diving into an ice pond and pulling them to safety. The fact that he did something so courageous despite the adverse surroundings and his young age is nothing short of astounding.
On February 4, a young man named Salmon, who was 17 years old at the time, was ice fishing and watching a snowmobile race when he saw a Jeep go through the ice and fall into the frozen pond. Thomas Lee, who was 83 years old at the time, and his dog, Cooper, had both gone careening off the road and into the pond.
As soon as Salmon saw the car sinking under the ice, he hurriedly entered it and began to take corrective measures. The young teenager received assistance from four other people who were there at the scene at the same time as him.
The young man immediately dialed 911 and then used his knife to break one of the car’s windows in order to get the dog out of the vehicle first.
In the meanwhile, Lee was saved thanks to the combined efforts of the youngster as well as those of the other people who had assembled at the site. A drone took footage of the whole search and rescue operation.
“The driver was brought to [a hospital] and is doing okay,” as stated by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office.
The dog was given water and now seems to be in good health.
This was the first time that the young man had been involved in a situation of this kind.
The young man added that, “I’m delighted that he was OK and that the dog was OK, at the moment, everything were completely out of control. I’ve never done anything even similar to it before.”
