Terry Edgell’s request for a “serious chat” with his wife, Jude, left her worried the divorce was imminent, instead, she was greeted with the news that she and her husband had just purchased a castle.
The couple had previously been looking for a vacation property in Spain, but decided to have a look at Penllyn Castle, which is 200 years old.
To Jude’s dismay, her husband secretly paid £775,000 for the fairy-tale castle despite the fact that it needed a lot of maintenance.
Jude said: ” I was excited and terrified at the same time. The castle has always been a part of my imagination and i remember thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t believe people live in homes like that'”.
The first time I entered the drawing-room, “all the hairs on my neck stood up, and I still feel that tug.”
Jude was in charge of the bulk of the project and specialist trade professionals were brought in to help her with the project, including the site manager, a conservation architect, an archaeologist, and an engineer.
“I want it there for the next 100, 200 years and It’s incredibly important to me that long after my days are through, it stands there”
As Jude put it, “It will never be worth what it’s cost us in our lifetime, the budget is a “rolling sum”, but, for us, it’s a labor of love, not a financial investment.”
