Jennifer Lopez understands what it means to be a helpful mom. During a recent performance at the Los Angeles Dodgers Blue Diamond Gala, the singer used they/them pronouns to introduce her kid, Emme Maribel Muiz, before bringing them out to sing a duet.

“The last time we played together was in a large stadium like this,” Lopez said to the audience before the couple sang Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years” together. “And I beg them to sing with me all the time, but they won’t, so this is a very special event.” They are quite busy. It’s booked, and it’s expensive. When they come out, they cost me. But they’re worth every dime since they’re my all-time favorite duet partner.

The introduction at the Blue Diamond Gala was purportedly the first time Lopez publicly used gender-neutral pronouns for Emme, the 14-year-old daughter of Lopez’s ex-husband Marc Anthony. Emme, who ascended the stage with a rainbow microphone in hand, previously sang “Born in the USA” and “Let’s Get Loud” alongside Lopez at the singer’s Super Bowl LIV halftime show in 2020.
